Back in early March when the American Idol 7 top twelve were first announced, I dubbed this season as “The Year Of The Davids.” I bestowed that title on season seven because half of the male finalists in the top twelve were named David. Now, that the final two have been revealed, “The Year Of The Davids” has proven to be a very appropriate title.
In the beginning, things weren’t looking too good for the Davids. The first finalist voted off the show was David Hernandez. However, the other two Davids proved to be more than capable of carrying the load. David Archuleta was a favorite right from the start, and David Cook quickly won over fans with his unique and lively performances.
Of course, both Davids had their struggles along the way. David Archuleta forgot the words to “We Can Work It Out,” and David Cook was accused of stealing the arrangements of some of his songs. However, Archuleta quickly bounced back, and Cook was vindicated by crediting the source of his arrangements.
The families of the two Davids also became a big part of the season. The press had a field day labeling David Archuleta’s dad as a stage dad, and David Cook’s brother, who is battling cancer, traveled to be in the audience while David performed.
Third place finisher Syesha Mercado had kind words to say about both of the Davids. After her elimination, Syesha said, “Well, of course, they’re unique. But David has that – David Archuleta has that beautiful smile, and he has that really, really good connection with kids, the younger audience. And David Cook has that connection with the younger audience. The girls go crazy over him. And the older audience too…really, really charming, like all the older women.”
So which David will ultimately emerge as the winner of American Idol 7? While both Davids will likely receive record deals, my prediction is that it’s finally going to be a rocker’s year to win on American Idol. Bo Bice, Constantine Maroulis, Chris Daughtry, Ryan Starr and Gina Glocksen paved the way, but it will be David Cook who finally wins an American Idol title for the rockers.
