Sixth Season Of Project Runway Not Until January 2009

Project Runway is making a move from Bravo to Lifetime once this current cycle of the show ends and that will delay the premiere of the sixth season until January 2009.

A network representative told Entertainment Weekly, “We look forward to ringing in the New Year by giving Project Runway loyal fans a superlative season six with Heidi, Tim, Nina, and Michael. The new date and time will be announced soon.”

The series will continue with two seasons per year after the move takes place.

Lifetime had originally intended for the show to be on the air by November of this year, but the excutives are now going to use that extra time to unleash a bigger promotional campaign and target the female audience for which the show was intended.

Project Runway is hugely popular and Bravo is not happy about losing the show to Lifetime. Bravo parent NBC Universal is sueing the Weinstein Company which produces the show for breach of contract, claiming that the studio shopped the series to Lifetime and inked a deal before giving its longtime home first right of refusal or the chance to match the terms. NBC/Universal also is attempting to block Lifetime from marketing and promoting future cycles of the show.

But even with the corporate difficulites, Project Runway’s fifth season is captivating over 3.5 million viewers a week on Bravo.

NBCU has kept Runway executive producers Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz on the team, signing an exclusive first-look with the pair in May, Bunim-Murray Productions is now directing Runway for Lifetime.

A network insider assured EW.com that the premiere delay is not due to logistical difficulties and that the next group of designers has been cast and production is on schedule.

Project Runway airs Wednesday at 8 PM ET on Bravo.

Lifetime just isn’t sassy enough for Project Runway, I’m sorry to say. PR may have jumped the shark.
