Extreme Makeover Home Edition Performs Two Makeovers

In this week’s episode of Extreme Makeover Home Edition, Ty Pennington and his design team take on not one but two makeovers. One of the makeovers is for Dawn Martirez, who needs a safer home for her special-needs children. The other makeover is the remodel of Sam Malke’s coffee shop. Sam employs disabled individuals and donates part of his coffee shop earnings to charity.

Dawn Martirez has worked as a pediatric cancer nurse for most of her life, but she had to leave her career in order to take care of her own children full time. Dawn and her husband Emmanuel have a daughter named Elle and twins named Evan and Alec. The twins suffer from some rare genetic disorders. Evan has a condition called 9P minus, and Alec has a condition called Crouzon Syndrome.

Both Evan and Alec have skeletal abnormalities that have required extensive corrective facial and cranial surgeries. Evan also has physical handicaps and mental retardation, and Alec is hearing impaired. The current Martirez family home has cramped narrow hallways, steep stairs, crumbling driveway and a single, handicapped inaccessible bathroom. Ty Pennington and his design team will work to make sure the home is able to accommodate the twins’ special needs.

Sam Malek has cerebral palsy and has undergone 29 surgeries in the past 40 years. Having beaten the odds countless times, Sam decided to purchase a small coffee shop called “More Than Coffee” in April of 2007. The motto of his coffee shop is “Helping Challenged People One Cup at a Time.” Sam employs disabled individuals at his coffee shop and donates part of his profits to charity. Unfortunately, the coffee shop has cramped space, termite infestation and lacks all the proper equipment. Ty Pennington and his designers will work to fix all the problems at “More Than Coffee.”

Ty Pennington and his design team will work with Callier Thompson Shea Construction & Design, LLC, Consolidated Construction Group Inc and hundreds of volunteers to help the Martirez and Malek families. The design team consists of designers Paige Hemmis, Ed Sanders, Eduardo Xol and John Littlefield.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition airs on Sunday, November 9 from 8 PM to 9 PM ET on ABC.
