American Idol: Fantasia Barrino In The Color Purple

American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino is set to reprise her role as the lead character Celie in the Broadway musical The Color Purple. The show will open in Washington in June and will tour for five weeks.

The Color Purple is an inspiring family saga that tells the unforgettable story of a woman who, through love, finds the strength to triumph over adversity and discover her unique voice in the world. Set to a joyous score featuring jazz, ragtime, gospel and blues, The Color Purple is a story of hope and a celebration of life.

Fantasia Barrino is the first American Idol winner to star on Broadway. She is a single mother and high school dropout from North Carolina, who rose to fame after winning the third season of American Idol in 2004.

Fantasia Barrino recently won the 2009 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Duo or Group for the duet I’m His Only Woman with Jennifer Hudson.
