Tonight on ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition, Ty Pennington and the design team are traveling to El Paso Texas to help the Ruiz family. Maria Ruiz was once honored on CNN Heroes for her work to feed the hungry. They currently feed about 1200 children out of their own kitchen. Both of the Ruiz parents work, but their income doesn’t stretch to support the charity they run, and do necessary repairs on their own home, which is deteriorating.
“Good Morning Ruiz family!” Ty shouts as they arrive at the family home in El Paso on Door Knock Day. Jesus, Maria, daughter Elizabeth, and son Jesus Jr come out to greet the design team. Ty Pennington tells them they will be going on vacation at Atlantis in the Bahamas while the renovation is completed!
Maria Ruiz shows Ty through the house, which is jammed with pick-ups for their charity. Maria explains that much of their furniture is missing because they’ve given it away to others who needed it! Pennington is amazed to see that she feeds the hungry out of a kitchen with only a four-burner stove and a single refrigerator. He notes that the Ruiz family doesn’t have much themselves, but they go out of their way to help other people, that’s why they’re heroes on Extreme Makeover Home Edition!
Rib Hillis speaks to the Ruiz’s young son, who shares that he likes rap and hip-hop music, and graffiti art. Elizabeth tells Paige Hemmis that she is interested in painting and drawing scenery. Jesus shows Eduardo and Paul where water comes into the family room. Out on the balcony, they note that they can see Mexico, the city that gave Jesus birth, and also where the Ruiz family feeds the hungry. Paul says the mission this week is to fix this family’s home!

Desert View Builders is providing hope for the Ruiz family as well as the lives they touch everyday by overseeing the building of the new Extreme Makeover home. Ty Pennington gets in touch with the Ruiz family, who are now in the Bahamas, and tells them that all of the volunteers have brought food donations! Ty and the design team have fun with the demo by making it into a spoof of an infomercial. Maria Ruiz and her family hold one another as they watch the demo - she notes that they will never forget what has been done for them.
By Day 3, the house is really coming along, and Rib Hillis is working on Jesus Jr’s room. He is using old vinyl record albums in his design. Paige is working on Elizabeth’s room. She sketches a beautiful sunset, saying she needs to figure out how to bring it into the room! Ty Pennington has letters from some of the thousands of kids that have been helped or fed by the Ruiz family. He will incorporate the letters into his special project this week.
Paul and Eduardo are at SouthWest Airlines, which has donated a lot of food to help the Ruiz family effort. Paul and Eduardo also meet with the community to talk about the help that the Ruiz family provides to the town of Juarez Mexico nearby. Eduardo, who is from Mexico, is particularly touched by this Extreme Makeover Home Edition project, saying that his own mother came from poverty. Outside of the meeting, trucks pull up that are full of food that has been donated in honor of the Ruiz family. Maria, watching via video feed from the Bahamas, is very moved by the sight of all that food!
On Day 5, Ty Pennington is accepting delivery of a fleet of new appliances for the Ruiz family to use to feed people. Paul has got some of the community children together to decorate ceramic bowls for use in the design of the backyard fountain. The bowls will feed into one another, representing the work that the Ruiz family does. Ty takes receipt of the keys next on Extreme Makeover Home Edition and the volunteers and design team excitedly start moving in new furniture - again noting that the family gave theirs away to people who needed it more!

Soon, the limo is arriving behind the Extreme Makeover Home Edition bus. The Ruiz family emerges from the car and greets Ty Pennington. He leads the chant of “Move that bus!” Jesus, the father, praises God when he lays eyes on the new house. Maria calls it a big blessing that will enable them to help more people. They thank Randy O’Leary from Desert View Homes, as well as the design team. Ty urges them to go check out their new house!
As the Ruiz family sees the new open concept home, Jesus remarks on how wonderful it is to have a great family room - their former one had become a warehouse! Out in the backyard, Maria marvels over the bowls painted by the children that have been incorporated into a water fountain - she calls it a gift. Ty encourages them to go check out the rest of the house. The sight of his new beatbox-themed room, complete with mixing board, blows Jesus Jr away! Elizabeth declares her room to be ‘amazing’ - every morning she can wake up to a beautiful sunset! Maria and Jesus love the colors and lighting in their tranquil new master bedroom.
Ty then takes Maria with him to see ’something special’ on Extreme Makeover Home Edition. He explains that it is something he thinks she needs to continue doing what she does. She opens the door and cries as she sees a gigantic kitchen full of cabinets and appliances, as well as the letters from the children she has helped in the past! She is amazed at the size of the storage area built in. Ty tells her that Sears donated the Pro series appliances to enable her to continue her good work. He also tells Maria that they have collected 75,000 cans of food in one week! Ty marvels that they are one family that helps thousands of families. The Ruiz family thanks Ty and the team. Ty says, “Welcome home, Ruiz family. Welcome home!”
