MTV’s New Reality Show ‘Jersey Shore’ Sparks Controversy

MTV’s newest reality show, Jersey Shore, is described as a documentary style series that follows a group of young people as they live and work in Jersey. It will be focused on the Italian-American culture and feature some of the “hottest, tannest, craziest Guidos.” But not so fast… the network is already receiving complaints about the portrayal of Italians on the show…

Last week, the country’s largest Italian-American service organization, UNICO, said that Jersey Shore is offensive to Italian-Americans and demanded it be canceled. Andre Dimino, the organization’s president, also said that he took special offense to the word “Guido.”

But MTV is standing by their idea. According to an MTV spokesperson, the show is simply one of many that documents “various subcultures, rites of passage of young people, and the ways they self-identify.” The spokesperson continued,”The Italian-American cast takes pride in their ethnicity. We understand that this show is not intended for every audience and depicts just one aspect of youth culture.”
